We can do this until you either return to Australia or disembark at the end of your domestic cruise, provided the relevant injury or sickness is covered by your policy.

If you injure yourself or become sick while on a cruise, provided the relevant injury or sickness is covered by your policy. We will arrange and pay certain assistance services you may need. These may include:

  • medical transfer or evacuation to the nearest overseas hospital or back to Australia; and
  • return of your dependants to Australia, if they are left unsupervised following your admission to hospital or evacuation.
  • Cabin Confinement2,3

With Allianz Travel Insurance, the cruise pack is an optional add-on to your travel insurance policy. When you purchase your policy you will be asked if you are going sea or ocean cruising. You have the option to add a cruise pack for an additional premium. Your premium will be adjusted if you select the Cruise Pack.

When you add a cruise pack to your travel insurance policy you will have medical cover while cruising (provided the relevant injury or sickness is covered by your policy) and evacuation cover (ship to shore). Other benefits such as pre-paid shore excursion cancellations and damaged or delayed formal cruise wear1 are also included.

You will not need to purchase a Cruise pack if:

  • you will only be participating in river cruising - this activity is automatically covered in the section Activities included in this Product on page 20; or
  • you are travelling in Australian waters as a passenger on a vessel which does not have on-board accommodation and trained medical staff. For example: a 1/2 day catamaran cruise around the Whitsunday Islands.

For more details and to ensure that you purchase a cover that suits your needs, consider reading the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS)

Our Cruise Pack is an optional add on that provides specific cover while cruising. The cost of your travel insurance for your cruise will depend on a number of factors, such as the duration of your trip, your age and the destination(s) you are travelling to.

The level of medical attention is related to the seriousness of the ailment. If you get sick or injured you may need to visit the on-board doctor. If your illness or injury is serious, you may require further treatment off the ship. You will be transferred to hospital at the next port or evacuated from the cruise ship.

There is also the risk of norovirus gastroenteritis outbreaks as well as COVID-19 on cruise ships. Ship doctors are private so the out-of-pocket expenses can be significant.

If you have purchased a cruise pack you may be covered for your medical expenses, cabin confinement and any pre-paid shore excursions that you may need to cancel1.

Even if you are on a cruise that is travelling in Australian waters, Medicare may not cover you. The cruise ship may not have an Australian accredited Medicare-accessible doctor on board to treat you.

Purchase a Cruise Pack to add to your Domestic travel insurance to ensure you’re covered for any medical expenses that may arise from sickness or injury1.

Yes, our cruise pack is available to travellers of any age on our Comprehensive and Domestic plans1. If you’re a traveller on a Multi-Trip plan you can also purchase a cruise pack. However a Multi-Trip policy is only available if you’re under 75 years at the time the Certificate of Insurance is issued1.
