Ever wondered how excess affects your car insurance claims? We tackle the ins and outs of excess to help you better understand your policy.

Find answers to common questions about buying Allianz Car Insurance.

Each insurance company calculates the cost of car insurance differently.

The cost of your car insurance is determined by a range of factors.

When calculating your car insurance premium, we consider factors such as:

  • the age, driving experience and claims history of the person who drives the car most
  • the year, make and model of your car
  • the location your car is parked

Comprehensive car insurance isn’t mandatory in Australia but there are benefits to having it. If you choose not to take out comprehensive car insurance and you or the driver of your car is at fault in an accident, you’ll be responsible for the cost of any damage to your own car as well as for the damages caused to any third party property.

Did you purchase your car with a loan? Some financial institutions might require you to have comprehensive car insurance if you took out a loan to purchase your car.

You can get a Comprehensive Car Insurance quote online by:

  1. Clicking ‘ Get your quote
  2. Entering your car details and main driver information (this is the person who drives the car most).
  3. Select from Comprehensive Car Insurance, Comprehensive Essentials or Third Party Property Damage Insurance.
  4. Adjust your excess to suit your needs where available.
    • A higher excess can lower your premium.
  5. Review your quote.
    • You can buy car insurance online or email it to yourself and come back later.
  6. If you buy insurance, you can download your Certificate of Currency or get it emailed to you.

When you take out Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance, we’ll agree on an amount with you that we’ll cover your car for. We call this the 'agreed value'.

It's up to you to decide how much cover you need (within a given range). As a guide, it should be enough to replace your car if a covered incident happened and your car couldn’t be repaired.

You can always find the agreed value in your policy documentation.

With our Comprehensive Essentials option, we offer market value cover.

An excess is the amount you’ll need to pay towards the cost of a claim. When you take out Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance, you have the choice to adjust your excess within the given range. If you raise your excess, this will decrease the cost of your premium.

For example, say your car is damaged in a covered accident and needs $6,000 of repairs. If your policy has a $1,100 excess, then you’ll need to pay the $1,100 excess and your car insurance will cover the remaining $4,900 repair costs.

Situations you’re commonly required to pay an excess include:

  • Because you were the at fault driver.
  • Damage caused to the vehicle due to a weather event.
  • If the at fault driver’s details are incorrect, unavailable or you’re unable to get them at the time of the incident.

For more information, read our car insurance excess guide.

When you purchase comprehensive car insurance it doesn’t include CTP (Compulsory Third Party Insurance).

CTP, also known as a Green Slip in NSW, covers your liability and the liability of anyone else who drives your car for injuries you may have caused to other road users in a motor accident. CTP doesn't provide cover for any damage you cause to other people's cars or property.

Yes. With Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance, we cover anyone driving your car – as long as there’s no age limit on your policy details documents.2

Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance can cover damage for a broken windscreen. In 2024, over 20% of Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance claims were for windscreen damage.

If your windscreen needs to be repaired or replaced, you’ll usually pay an excess – unless you add our optional cover. This removes the excess for windscreen-only claims. It also includes all windows and sunroofs. You can claim for one windscreen replacement and two windscreen repairs every policy year.

Yes, with Allianz Comprehensive Car Insurance, you have the freedom to choose your own repairer.1 If you have a preferred repairer, you're welcome to use them. Otherwise, we can help you find one.

Yes, it can – but only if you let us know your car is being used for ridesharing such as Uber. If you let us know you plan to use your car for ridesharing, we may be able to cover you. You can do this during the quote process or ask us about ridesharing cover at any time.

Yes. We can cover your 4WD for accidental loss or damage, including for theft, fire damage, and in some cases, off-road driving. You're typically covered for recreational four-wheel driving if the car was built for this purpose.

You won’t be covered if you use your car in an off-road competition.

We don’t typically cover modifications to the engine, body or custom paint jobs.

Generally, we cover standard tools, modifications and accessories provided by the manufacturer. You don’t need to list your car’s accessories separately – just make sure you include their value when choosing how much to insure your car for.

With Comprehensive Car Insurance, we can also cover you for disability modifications, up to your agreed value.

If you have something specific in mind, ask us and we’ll confirm if it’s covered.

No. You’ll need to call us to take out our Caravan and Trailer Insurance cover if you want insurance for your caravan or trailer. This is separate to our Comprehensive Car Insurance cover.

  1. If you choose your own repairer, we may need a second quote from another repairer chosen by us just to make sure the quote you've received is reasonable. We may then authorise repairs, pay you reasonable repair costs or the car’s agreed value or replace your new car where policy conditions are met. No additional premium will be charged if the customer uses their own EV repairer.

  2. If your new car is stolen or written off within two years of manufacture, you can choose for us to pay you the agreed value or to have your new car replaced with one of the same make and model where available in Australia.

  3. We'll arrange a rental car of a similar size and type to your car after a covered collision where you are not at fault and have provided us with the at fault person's details. You’ll get a rental car for a maximum of up to 30 days. This benefit will end earlier if your car is repaired and returned to you, we pay you the cost of repairs, or we settle your claim as a total loss. If a rental car of a similar size and type (e.g. medium SUV) to your car is not available, we will pay you a travel allowance of $80 a day for as long as we would have given you a rental car. See the PDS for more details.

  4. We'll reimburse you up to $500 for the costs of travelling from the scene of the accident or to or from the repairer or rental car provider.

  5. We’ll pay up to $500 per incident for extra accommodation costs if you’re more than 100 km from home and your car isn’t drivable after a covered incident.

  6. We’ll pay up to $1,000 per period of insurance for key replacement and lock recoding if your car key is stolen and you’ve reported the theft to the police.

  7. We’ll pay up to $1,000 per incident to replace your personal belongings if they’re lost, stolen, or damaged because of a covered incident unless the car itself isn’t damaged or stolen, or is left unlocked. Excludes cash, credit cards, cheques, firearms, tools, or other items related to a business.

  8. We’ll pay to replace any damaged or stolen child seat or baby capsule in your car at the time of a covered incident (up to $650 per seat, per incident) unless the car itself isn't damaged or stolen.

  9. Provides up to $20 million cover for damage you cause to other people's cars or property, arising out of a single accident and its related events.

  10. If you choose this option, we will arrange a rental car of a similar size and type to your car for as long as it takes to either fix your car, pay you the cost of repairs, or determine if your car is a total loss. This will apply after any covered incident, no matter who is at fault. If a rental car of a similar size and type (e.g. medium SUV) to your car is not available, we will pay you a travel allowance of $80 a day for as long as we would have given you a rental car. See the PDS for more details.

  11. Market value means the cost to replace your car with a car of the same make, model, age and condition as your vehicle immediately prior to the loss or damage. This excludes costs and charges for registration, CTP insurance, stamp duty transfer, dealer warranty costs, transfer fees, and dealer delivery. See the PDS for more information.

  12. Battery thermal runaway for EVs is covered under fire, provided there has been no deviation from manufacturer specification in relation to battery usage and charging.

  13. Roadside Assistance is provided by AWP Australia Pty Ltd ABN 52 097 227 177. Service area limits, entitlement limits, exclusions and terms and conditions apply. For full details, read the terms and conditions.
